CLEVELAND -- Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson sustained a potential season-ending Achilles tendon injury during the first half of Cleveland's 21-14 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals. This marked Joe Burrow's first road victory over the Browns, an in-state AFC North rival.
Watson's injury occurred on a non-contact play as he dropped back to pass, leading to his immediate fall to the ground. Players from both teams surrounded him, offering support as he was carted off the field, covering his head with a towel.
The Browns announced Watson injured his Achilles but did not provide further details. Given the circumstances, there is a strong possibility he has played his last game for Cleveland.
In the game, Burrow threw two touchdown passes after halftime, helping the Bengals (3-4) break a six-game losing streak against the Browns. He completed 15 of 25 passes for 181 yards, connecting with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins for scores.
Watson, who signed a fully guaranteed $230 million contract in 2022, has faced a tumultuous tenure with off-field issues and injuries impacting his performance. Before his injury, he was performing well, completing 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards. He was replaced by Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who struggled, throwing two interceptions before leaving the game injured.
Meanwhile, the Bengals started strong with Charlie Jones returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Browns running back Nick Chubb made a one-yard touchdown run shortly after Watson's exit, receiving a loud ovation from fans.
Next week, the Bengals will face Philadelphia, while the Browns will host Baltimore.
